Winter service

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration is responsible for all snow removal on highways and pays all costs for the removal of the routes shown on the Road Administration's winter service map and in accordance with the rules that apply there.

Rule A - 7 days a week

Rule B - 6 days a week

Rule C - 5 days a week

Rule D - 4 days a week

Rule E - 3 days a week

Rule F - 2 days a week

Rule G - 2 days a week spring and autumn

It is permitted to shovel two days a week in autumn and spring while there is light snow.

The autumn period is defined as November 1st and the spring period from March 20th.
It is considered to be "light snow" according to these rules when there is a small amount of snow and the road condition is not considered impassable, difficult or thawing on the route in question and when the service operation consists solely of clearing the roadway with a snow removal truck.
Roads that fall under the G-rule may be cleared once a week until 5th of January at the expense of the IRCA administration and thereafter once a week at the request and against half payment from the municipality so that it is possible for four-wheel drive vehicles and/or when the cost of such removal is generally not more than three times the costs incurred when the route is considered snow-light.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration assesses whether the shoveling in question is realistic in terms of usability and costs.

Winter service subject to decision by municipality

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has defined the roads where it is permissible to apply the so-called Half clearing rule, cf. Appendix II, list of half cleared roads.

The roads listed therein may be cleared with cost participation. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration will clear maximum of three times a week, as long as it is possible due to weather conditions and heavy snow. IRCA will then pay half of the cost when the removal is requested and payment of the other party has been ensured, provided that it also benefits passers-by rather than just those who ask for it. Municipal requests for such a clearing shall generally take precedence over the wishes of individuals.
